Temporary Contract Vertical Cultivator

Huronia Transition Homes is non-profit organization working to end all violence against all women. We operate 5 primary programs in North Simcoe, including Operation Grow, a social enterprise located in Midland.  Operation Grow is holistically designed to address poverty, food scarcity, isolation, and the impacts of violence. This innovative social enterprise combines a hydroponic vertical farm, yoga studio, commercial kitchen and retail space to provide opportunities for women who have survived violence to increase their livelihoods. 

Huronia Transition Homes is currently hiring a full time contract (6 month), 40-hrs per week, Vertical Cultivator to work at the agency’s social enterprise in Midland, ON. The successful candidate for this position will participate in the day-to-day farm operations and supporting the low barrier employment program.

The key responsibilities include:
  • Operations of the farm (including input, process, logistics, and growing)
  • Coordinate and manage crop scheduling
  • Manage project activities throughout lifecycle
  • Ensure that all equipment and facilities are in good working order
  • Supervise, coordinate and schedule activities of shift leads and vertical cultivators
  • Ensure strict adherence to Standard Operation Procedures and Standard Sanitization Operating Procedures
  • Promote a healthy, safe, and clean environment
  • Provide training and support Vertical Cultivators
  • Provide support as needed to women with barriers to employment
Qualifications
  • Relevant education or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience in food production and distribution
  • Familiarity with third party food safety management and audit process
  • Familiarity with indoor growing environments (i.e. atmosphere controls, lighting systems, water and nutrient controls)
  • Previous experience LED-based hydroponic indoor growing environments would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable knowledge of anti-racism, anti-oppression, violence against women, and harm reduction.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds,
  • Ability to reach, bend, kneel and stoop
  • Ability to stand for majority of 8.5 hour shift (34-hours/week)
