Business Manager - Operation Grow (OG)
Job Summary
The Business Manager is responsible for the coordination and management of all business-related activities at Huronia Transition Homes’ (HTH) social enterprise Operation Grow (OG). This role is accountable for the planning, coordination, and performance of all business functions, including retail operations, hydroponic farm production, kitchen production, sales, and community engagement.
The Business Manager ensures the financial sustainability and growth of OG while embedding harm reduction principles and an intersectional feminist framework into all business activities. Working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, leadership, and external partners, the role balances mission-driven outcomes with business excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
BUSINESS OPERATIONS
- Provide overall coordination and oversight of OG business operations, ensuring consistent, uninterrupted business continuity
- Implement, evaluate, and evolve OG business strategies, including farm optimization, merchandising, and customer experience
- Align retail, farm, and kitchen operations to ensure efficient production, inventory flow, and sales performance
- Provide operational coverage and hands-on support within farm, kitchen, and retail environments as required
- Ensure all business activities align with HTH’s values, policies, harm reduction approach, and intersectional feminist principles
- Maintain compliance with all applicable health, safety, and regulatory requirements
FARM PRODUCTION
- Lead and coordinate hydroponic farm production to meet retail and wholesale demand
- Oversee farm operations, including growth cycle management, troubleshooting plant growth issues, data collection, and quarterly inventory
- Develop and maintain farm production schedules aligned with optimal farm capacity and business needs
- Collaborate with subject matter experts and farm staff to ensure consistent, high-quality yields and operational continuity
- Collect and analyze farm data and prepare quarterly reports
- Maintain a network within hydroponic farming communities
SALES, RETAIL & WHOLESALE MANAGEMENT:
- Manage all retail operations including sales performance, merchandising, and customer experience
- Implement and maintain HTH approved merchandising standards
- Manager all wholesale accounts, orders, and relationships; actively identify and secure new wholesale customers
- Develop and execute sales strategies, promotions, special events, rentals, and catering services
- Propose pricing for OG products in alignment with established pricing frameworks
- Track product donations and ensure appropriate documentation
- Manage supplier, vendor, rental, catering, and partnership agreements
- Ensure compliance with insurance and risk requirements for renters and external users
- Uphold and operationalize HTH’s social procurement policy
CUSTOMER SERVICE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
- Establish and maintain customer service standards that reflect OG’s mission and values
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, partners, and community stakeholders
- Coordinate the recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, training, and supervision of volunteers supporting retail and vendor activities
- Support volunteers in delivering positive and inclusive customer experiences
- Plan and coordinate volunteer recognition and appreciation initiatives
- Develop an annual calendar of promotions, events, and community-facing activities
- Represent OG in community and business networks to expand visibility and partnerships
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & REPORTING:
- Utilize Lightspeed POS to manage sales transactions, invoicing, inventory control, and payments
- Complete cash handling and deposits in accordance with HTH policies
- Prepare and analyze financial reports, including monthly sales summaries and profit-and-loss statements
- Conduct cost and profitability analysis for new products, programs, or initiatives
- Monitor sales performance and contribute to forecasting and financial planning
TEAM & AGENCY PARTICIPATION:
- Coordinate OG’s working group
- Active participation in leadership and agency meetings
- Work collaboratively as a team member in identifying, developing, and recommending improvements for service delivery
- Work collaboratively with management, staff, and volunteers to ensure effective support and service provision
- Promote a healthy and respectful workplace
- Participate in applicable training, supervision, and team meetings
- Practice open, direct, and respectful communication
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Abide by all policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of HTH
QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant post-secondary education in business, administration, or a related field
- 5+ years of relevant experience in business operations, entrepreneurship or social enterprise
- Strong financial acumen
- Demonstrated understanding of social enterprise
- Demonstrated experience in retail and/or wholesale operations
- Strong customer service and relationship management skills
- Experience managing vendors, contracts, and partnerships
- Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of POS systems (e.g., Lightspeed) and inventory management
- Demonstrable knowledge of intersectional feminism, anti-racism, anti-oppression, harm reduction, and poverty reduction
- Understanding of local business networks and community partnerships is an asset
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
- Strong active listening skills, professionalism, and the ability to build respectful relationships with colleagues, service users, and community members are essential. Proficiency with technology and the ability to quickly learn new systems are also required. The successful candidate will also work within a harm reduction philosophy, applying non-judgmental, evidence-informed approaches that meet women where they are at while supporting safety, dignity, and empowerment.

Candidates must understand the impacts of systemic oppression, gender-based violence, and inequality, and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning in these areas.
